B-9-1 Drivers license 運転免許
To drive a car or motorbike in Japan you need either an international driver’s license or a Japanese driver’s license. An international driver’s license is valid for one year. If you get an international driver’s license sent to you it is only valid for the one year after you arrived in Japan.
The following is about how to transfer your driver’s license from your own country to a Japanese license and how to get a driver’s license in Japan.
日本で自動車やバイクを運転するには、日本の自動車運転免許証又はジュネーブ条約加盟国で交付された国際免許証が必要です。国際免許証は発行から有効期間1年、日本に入国後に取り寄せたものは入国後1年間有効です。ここでは、外国（自国免許）から日本免許への切り替えや日本での運転免許取得について説明します。
- Transferring your license to a Japanese driver’s license
(1) Conditions
(a)You must have a valid license.
(b)You must have lived in the country the license was issued for more than 3 months after the license was issued.
※The documents necessary for transferring licenses are different depending on what country issued the license. Be sure to ask beforehand so that you can get the necessary documents.
・A translation of the license is necessary but only translations done by the Japan Automobile Federation （JAF） or an embassy will be accepted.

・Included in the procedures are a written exam, a practical exam and/or an aptitude test etc. The written exam is available in different languages.

- 日本の運転免許証への切り替え
(1) 申請条件
(a)有効な外国免許を持っていること。
(b)外国免許を取得後、3か月以上その国に住んでいたこと。
※外国免許の発給国によって必要書類が異なりますので事前に相談してください。必要書類などはそのとき教えてもらえます。
・手続きに必要な免許の翻訳文は、「JAF」または大使館作成のものに限ります。「JAF」は、日本自動車連盟の略です。

・切り替えに際しては学科の試験、実技試験、適性検査などが行われます。学科試験は各国語で受けられることもあります。
