I thoroughly enjoyed reading Isaac Asimov’s work while growing up. The TV series hits on a lot of the topics, while not precisely the same as the book, it is very enjoyable. I was excited to see Foundation make it to the screen. Now, I eagerly await the next season.

Apple TV+ sci-fi series ‘Foundation,’ season 2, now shooting in Prague

Foundation, an Apple TV+ sci-fi series based on the series of novels by Isaac Asimov, began production of its second season in Prague on April 11. It will shoot in the Czech Republic through June, with Prague being a primary shooting location for the second season of the show.

One of Apple’s most ambitious original productions, the second season of Foundation began filming in the Canary Islands shortly before moving to Prague.

Foundation is created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, who previously collaborated on Terminator: Dark Fate, and features an ensemble cast led by Lee Pace (The Hobbit, Halt and Catch Fire) and Jared Harris (Mad Men and the recent Morbius).

The second season of Foundation is expected to transition to new and different worlds from Asimov’s series, which is where locations in Prague and the Czech Republic could fit in.

With season two, our audience will get to visit more of Asimov’s indelible characters and worlds, including Hober Mallow, General Bel Riose, and all the Outer Suns. We’re playing the long game with Foundation and I’m grateful to my partners at Apple and Skydance for entrusting me with this epic. Buckle up. We’re about to fold some serious space.

Foundation joins an increasingly large number of epic sci-fi and fantasy series to shoot in Prague, following The Wheel of Time, which recently shot its second season in the Czech capital, and Carnival Row, which wrapped its second season in Prague last year.

Two decades ago, the miniseries Dune and Children of Dune also shot in Prague; the recent Dune films from Denis Villeneuve were shot in nearby Budapest.

Production on the first season of Foundation was significantly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and took a total of nineteen months. Originally scheduled to shoot in London, production was primarily moved to Malta; scenes were also shot in Tenerife and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

In addition to Harris and Pace, primary cast members Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton are confirmed to be returning for the second season of Foundation.

New members of the supporting cast have also been confirmed to be joining the series, and include Holt McCallany (Mindhunter), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (The Wheel of Time), Isabella Laughland, Kulvinder Ghir, Ella-Rae Smith, Dimitri Leonidas, Ben Daniels, Mikael Persbrandt, Rachel House, and Nimrat Kaur.

Episodes of the first season of Foundation were directed by Rupert Sanders (tapped to film a new adaptation of The Crow in Prague later this year), Alex Graves (Game of Thrones), and Goyer, who also serves as Foundation’s showrunner.

Apple has currently renewed Foundation for a 10-episode second season, but Goyer is planning on significantly more.

Game of Thrones was really the first of these big, giant novelistic shows. And now, with Foundation, we can tell the story, hopefully, over the course of 80 episodes, or 80 hours, as opposed to trying to condense it all into two or three hours for a single film.

A release date for Foundation season 2 on Apple TV+ has yet to be confirmed, but look for the series to stream in late 2022 or early 2023.
