When I was a kid, I remember looking at those that could solve the Rubik’s cube in awe. Then after learning the basic “algorithms” (or patterns) to solve it, I too joined the ranks of the “geniuses.” Eventually, I realized that everyone already has the “hardware” in their brains to “compute” the patterns. We, as a species, are actually good at pattern recognition thanks to our large occiptial lobe in the back of our heads. The history of the Rubik’s cube is quite interesting. I’ve recently found someone even designed a version of it out of LEGO! (See video below.)
What made me think about these types of puzzles is my sons found my stash of Rubiks cubes of various shapes and sizes. They started to chew and toss them around the room. They are almost 13 months old, so I don’t expect them to appreciate “my toys” just yet. But they do seem attracted to the shapes and colors. This is the reason I bought them a bunch of Duplo™️ LEGO sets. They love those! Nevertheless, getting these puzzles back in my hands revived a bit of nostalgia. And, I found myself reviewing how rubik’s cubes have changed since I first saw them as a kid. I was not disappointed as I found significant advances in how they are constructed plus new shapes! I’m quite amazed they now use magnets instead of solid cores to hold these beauties together. Below are some videos I found of interest.
